The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines or NUJP has publicly launched a limited fountain pen set to raise funds for the benefit of local media workers.

“We’re journalists and we believe that the only power that we wield is our words,” said Jhoanna Ballaran, journalist and national treasurer of NUJP. “So, why not use the fountain pen as a symbolism to make our advocacies heard?”

For Php800, the set features a gold-trimmed black fountain pen with a Kurm-branded gold-plated steel nib and a standard converter. It also includes two exclusive inks, the aptly-named Union Red and Journalist Blue, made by local producer New Brew.

Ang request talaga namin sa New Brew ay something that could represent what the union stands for,” Ballaran added. “Red, because we are advocating for freedom and courageous journalism, tapos yung blue of course it stands for the organization itself.”

Originally sold within the union to its local and overseas chapters as part of its 35th anniversary, the NUJP fountain pen set was launched to the public early in October to fund its operations national operations. Proceeds will also benefit the Nonoy Espina Emergency Fund for Media Workers, formerly known as the Tabang Media Program, which supports journalists in need.

“We want to remind people that words are powerful,” said Ballaran. “Sana ma-remind ang public through our fountain pens to write words that can change our society and to make sure that we use our written words for the betterment of society.”

Disclosure: We purchased our own NUJP fountain pen set for review, which will be posted soon.
