As the world becomes more digital, more people seek balance in the physical. Sales of fountain pens, paper planners and journals, even art supplies are soaring. The first Manila Fountain Pen Show on October 27 at SMX Meeting Room 1 in SM Aura, from 10 am to 6 pm, will showcase the analog lifestyle to both the enthusiast and the newly curious.
Many cities in the US and around the world have annual pen shows: the D.C. Supershow in the US capital, the Writing Equipment Society (WES) Show in London, the Madrid Pen Show, and more. Recently, Japan had its first Tokyo International Pen Show. The Philippines is home to generations of writing instrument fans. Fountain Pen Network-Philippines (FPN-P), informally established a decade ago, counts over six thousand Facebook members and over a thousand on its self-hosted forum. With its first pen show, FPN-P hopes to introduce even more people to the delights of pen, paper, ink, and writing and drawing by hand.
Manila’s first Fountain Pen Show lines up a full day of activities, including paper and ink stations; an introduction to calligraphy; an introduction to fountain pens for kids; and of course, shopping. Everything Calligraphy, Noteworthy by NBS, and Scribe headline the event. Visitors will see Cross, Lamy, Montblanc, PenGrafik, and Straits Pen from Singapore. Other vendors include Faber-Castell, Parker, and Troublemaker Inks from Cebu. The show features small independent shops and services: Gav ’n Sav (pen wraps), Guia’s Vintage Pen Corner, JP’s Pen Spa, John Lim’s nib work services, Kasama (the first Filipino fountain pen), and Shibui PH.
The show will retail an exclusive ink called Manila Copper, specially mixed by Straits Pen, with part of the proceeds going to charity. In lieu of an entrance fee, attendees can purchase a raffle ticket to benefit Save the Children’s efforts. Calibre Magazine will sponsor a free leather pen sleeve-making workshop, all materials included, as part of its support for the show. Thanks also go to PNB.
